World Class University Program “Agricultural Biotechnology for Crop Improvement : Some Experiences”

Monday, October 25th 2021 on 12.00 – 13.30 West Indonesian Time, Agricultural Science Doctoral Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University has held an event called General Lecture Word Class University Program with the title “Agricultural Biotechnology for Crop Improvement : Some Experiences”. The lecturer were Prof. Sanjib Kumar Panda, Head of Biochemistry Department from Central University of Rajasthan, India. The event opened with M. Arifin, M.Sc. as the moderator and opening remarks from Prof. Dr. Ir. Edi Purwanto, M.Sc as Head of Agricultural Science Doctoral Study Program of Sebelas Maret University.

Prof. Sanjib delivered topic about Biotechnology uses for the improvement of crops. Crop improvements basically refers to the genetic alteration of plants to satisfy human needs. There were few technique that used in modern crop biotechnology such as Genome editing, Gene silencing using RNAi technology, and Cisgenic. These technique works for genetic improvement and creating variation of crops that superior and able to survive to satisfy human needs. The use of biotechnology for crops also could reduce the risk of the crops getting attacked by pests and diseases. Prof. Sanjib also showed the participant about the experience of Biotechnology used in crop improvement called Golden Rice, the addition of two genes in the rice genome that will complete the biosynthetic pathway. Golden rice expected to improve vitamin A content to overcome the problem of vitamin A deficiency health problems.

This topic were very insightful for the participants so the discussion goes on very well between Prof. Sanjib and the participants. This event expected to increase participants’ knowledge about the use of biotechnology in improving the quality of plants for human needs.
