Inbound Scholar Exchange on the Soil Biology and Health

Soil Science Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University held an event called Inbound Scholar Exchange on the Soil Biology and Health on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. The event took place at 09.00-11.00 WIB through the Google meet application with 236 participants. On this occasion, the Soil Science Study Program had the opportunity to invite Prof. Gamini Seneviratne who is a Senior Research Professor, National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy, Sri Lanka as a resource person. The topic discussed at this event was “Microbial Signaling, Complex Network Interactions, and Sustainability of Agroecosystem: A Microbial Biofilm Intervention”. A series of Inbound Scholar Exchange events were hosted by a moderator, Prof. Dr. Ir. MMA Retno Rosariastusi, M.Si. The event began with remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Samanhudi SP, M.Sc., IPM, ASEAN Eng. The event continued with the presentation, question and answer session, and closing.

In the presentation session, Prof. Gamini Seneviratne discusses the role of biotic components, network science, how do they communicate in the network, until signaling processes in Symbiotic Plant-Microbe Interaction. One example of Symbiotic Plant-Microbe Interaction occurs in legume roots that release flavonoid compounds, which signal for rhizobia. In this case, legume communication for establishing their symbiosis. In his presentation, Prof. Gamini also mentioned that microbial signaling governs the sustainability of agroecosystems, but the human impact and global change collapse the signaling networks, hampering the sustainability, so the collapsed signaling networks can be restores through microbial interventions (eg biofilm biofertilizer (BFBF)) for reinstating the sustainability.

After the presentation of the material is finished, the question and answer session begins. Participants in the question and answer session had high enthusiasm. There were several questioners who had the opportunity to ask questions directly or through the chat box regarding the material that had been delivered. All participants were satisfied with today’s event. Furthermore, thanks were conveyed by the organizers and participants for the knowledge that had been conveyed by the resource persons. The last event was the closing which was closed by the moderator.
