The department of Soil Science (PSIT) curriculum is based on Outcome Based Education (OBE) with learning objectives that have been formulated strategically to produce high quality graduates. The PSIT curriculum is designed to run for 8 semesters (4 years). PSIT has implemented a curriculum based on Learning Outcomes and the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) as well as an agreement from the Association of Soil Science Study Programs (APSITI). The KKNI-based curriculum refers to Presidential Regulation No. 8 of 2012 and Permenristek DIKTI N0 50 of 2018, so it is instructed to reconstruct a curriculum based on Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0. This curriculum has the main characteristics of competency-based learning or outcome-based education (OBE). The formulation of a graduate profile which is an achievement that must be achieved by graduates after 2-5 years of work is the first step in preparing the curriculum.

Furthermore, compiling graduate learning outcomes (CPL) / Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) which are abilities that students must have when they graduate. To measure the achievement of PLO, study materials that support one course are prepared. Each course that is prepared must support the achievement of PLO. Each course has a CPMK (course learning achievement)/Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) which is correlated with PLO and study materials. In this curriculum, PSIT students are required to have the ability to meet the criteria in aspects of attitude, work ability, knowledge, managerial and responsibility aspects. The PSIT curriculum has been oriented towards the future and suitable with the VMTS study program, namely “Being a provider of education and development of superior science and technology in the field of land and watershed land resources at the national and international level”. The PSIT curriculum contains complete graduate competencies including main competencies, supporting competencies and other competencies that are formulated very clearly. The curriculum formulation is based on the results of the meeting of the Association of Indonesian Soil Science Study Programs (APSITI). The curriculum implemented (2016 curriculum) at PSIT refers to the Decree of the Chancellor of Sebelas Maret University No. 544A/UN.27/HK/2017 concerning the Curriculum of the Sebelas Maret University Undergraduate Program. The number of PS credits (minimum for graduation) is 144 credits.

By the Rector’s Regulation No. 31 of 2020 concerning the Implementation and Management of Undergraduate Programs, all courses are directed to support the achievement of graduate competencies and freedom to choose the fields of interest. Students are given the freedom to broaden their horizons and deepen their expertise according to their interests. The curriculum structure consists of University Compulsory Courses, Faculty Compulsory Courses, PSIT Compulsory Courses and elective courses. Each course is equipped with a course description and Semester Learning Plan (RPS). Determination of the final grade for each course is based on the mid-semester grades, semester-end grades, practicum grades (if courses include practicum) and assignments also quizzes. Independent Learning-Independent Campus (MB-KM) is a policy of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, which “gives freedom and autonomy to educational institutions, and freed of bureaucratization, lecturers are freed from complicated bureaucracy and students are given the freedom to choose ” their field of interest”.

Based on Permendikbud No. 3 of 2020 concerning National Standards for Higher Education in article 15 it is stated that this form of learning can be run within the Study Program and outside the Study Program. The right to study outside the study program and changes in the definition of credits, which are one of the MB-KM policies, are based on consideration of the current situation, namely; students do not have the flexibility to take classes outside the study program; the weight of credits for learning activities outside the classroom is very small and less contextual for students who are already active on campus; and student exchanges and/or work practices actually prevent students from graduating on time. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an incorporation of learning methods in each subject and accommodate it in a form of learning in the form of lectures, responses and tutorials, seminars, practices, research, military training, student exchanges, internships, entrepreneurship, and/or other forms of community service. Based on the above considerations, the new MB-KM policy direction emphasizes the obligation of universities to give students the right to take credits outside the study program and outside the university. All types of selected activities must be guided by lecturers determined by the college. Learning activities for 3 semesters outside the study program can be chosen from; (a) a program determined by the government and/or (b) a program approved by the chancellor. So that PSIT evaluates the 2016 curriculum by involving various stakeholders. The first evaluation was carried out through a webinar with the theme “Independent Campus Curriculum for Soil Science Study Program” on July 8, 2020 with Prof. Dr. Ir. Budi Mulyanto, M.Sc (Chairman of the Indonesian Soil Science Association-HITI), Dr. Ir. Dwi Setyawan, M.Sc (Head of PSIT Sriwijaya University), and Dr. Ir. Benito Heru Purwanto, M.Agr.Sc., M.P (Head of the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture UGM). The webinar also invited the heads of Soil Science Study Programs throughout Indonesia who are members of the Association of Indonesian Soil Science Study Programs (APSITI).

After getting input on the Independent Campus Curriculum, The department of Soil Science FP UNS designed the curriculum in accordance with the MB-KM provisions. To reinforce the design of the MB-KM curriculum, PSIT involves alumni including Ir. Hj. Sunarti, MM as Head of the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture and Livestock in Central Kalimantan Province and Dr. Ir. Jumadi, M.MT. as person in charge of Regional Secretary of East Java Province and Ir. Sri Kusrini Maruti, M.Sc. as Head of Sub Division of Administration of the National Land Agency of Salatiga. After the MB-KM curriculum design was formed, PSIT conducted a webinar entitled “Implementation of the Independent Campus Curriculum for The department of Soil Science” which was held on September 21, 2020 with Dr. Agung Budi Supangat, S.T., M.Hut. (Researcher of BalitekDAS), Dr. Ir. Benito Heru Purwanto, M.Agr.Sc., M.P (Chairman of the Department of Soil Science, FP UGM), and Dr. Mujiyo, S.P., M.P (Head of PSIT UNS). Dr. Mujiyo, S.P., M.P. explained about the MB-KM PSIT curriculum design and its implementation.

The composition of the MB-KM courses for The department of Soil Science is presented in Table 2. The webinar was attended by the academic community of PSIT FP UNS, managers of The department of Soil Science or similar at the undergraduate or master level, alumni and stakeholders. In the webinar, several scenarios were formulated in the implementation of the MB-KM curriculum.

The MB-KM curriculum in The department of Soil Science is designed as follows:

  1. Semester 5 students can complete MB-KM in the form of student exchange. The student exchange is carried out by taking courses outside The department of Soil Science at Sebelas Maret University.
  2. Semester 6, students can complete MB-KM in the form of student exchange by taking courses outside the study program outside Sebelas Maret University.
  3. Semester 7 or 8, students can complete MB-KM in various forms of learning activities according to the interests of the graduate profile expected by students. The form of these learning activities can be recognized in Internship, Community Service, Seminar and Thesis courses.
